Today, October 20th, 2024, the WHO Committee continued discussions on women’s abortion rights and sought solutions. The United States of America has submitted a proposed solution aimed at allowing all women worldwide access to abortion and ensuring a safe medical procedure, supported by China, the United Kingdom and Turkey, as well as the countries of Russia, Mexico, Norway and France. It was mentioned that abortion should be legalized in the following cases: 1. Rape, 2. Incest, 3. Severe fetal deformation and 4. if the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman is at risk. This topic should also be more widely disseminated in social media in order to share information with other nations and promote cooperation.
Turkey supported this proposal in a speech and stated that it is open to further solutions, with the aim of contributing to a meaningful resolution and providing assistance. China has cited as an example unsafe methods that women themselves use as an example, which can lead to health problems. It is emphasized that it is not about transcending cultures or religions but about solving a global problem. Iraq then expressed its opposition to this proposal and stated that this was going too far and that abortions were not possible in the cases mentioned. However, care should be taken to ensure that women receive more support, while at the same time culture and religion are respected.
The United States does not agree with this and believes that the decision should not be restricted by religion. Of course, they respect religion and culture, but not in this case. Iran then expressed its opinion and declared that abortion was a taboo subject. China replied that if nothing is done about it now, it will remain a problem forever and nothing will change. On the other hand Iran is taking the problem step by step. Iran is gradually addressing the problem, while Turkey does not want it to remain a taboo subject and is actively committed to it.
