The SPECPOL Committee today discussed the first topic: Measures to achieve the independence of non-self-governing territories, with a special regard to former states of the British Empire.

The event began with an introduction on the key points of the debate, including the role of artificial intelligence and the importance of penalties for inappropriate behavior or conduct. This was followed by a lobby period in which delegates proposed amendments to the existing resolutions.

A controversial amendment from China led to an outcry from the UK, resulting in a question and answer session between delegates. This interaction highlighted the tensions that often exist in discussions about the independence of former colonies.

After the lobbying period, the proposed amendments were voted on. In particular, delegates discussed the second point of the resolution, which proposed peaceful negotiations between the conflicting parties in Morocco. The focus was on the territorial dispute in Western Sahara, with the aim of preventing further human suffering. Concrete measures included increasing humanitarian aid to affected regions and the establishment of a demilitarized zone to be monitored by a UN peacekeeping mission.

A central point of the discussion was the recommendation of practical steps to implement the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. These steps should be taken under the supervision of the United Nations to ensure a democratic transition from foreign rule.

In a vote on an amendment that stipulated that the process towards independence should be supervised by the respective ruling country and not by the UN, 13 delegates voted against the amendment, while only 2 were in favor.

The vote was followed by another round of questions, which focused on China’s position and the reactions of other countries. This discussion underlined the complexity of international relations and the different perspectives on the independence of former colonies.

The atmosphere in the committees was very calm and relaxed, which could be due to the fact that the MUNOG party took place last night. Nevertheless, after a while it became apparent, that two groups of represenatives had already formed, who fought hard, and will certainly fight hard in the future, to ensure that their interests are enforced.
